Surrogacy utilizes in-vitro fertilization (IVF) to fertilize donor eggs and implant them in the uterus of the surrogate mother. With IVF, eggs are removed from the egg donor's body and fertilized with sperm from the prospective parent in a laboratory. Several embryos are then placed into a surrogate mother's uterus where they can implant on the uterine lining and begin to develop. During this course of action, both the egg donor and surrogate mother will receive medications to prepare them for the IVF procedure.

With traditional surrogacy the surrogate mother donates the eggs. This differs from gestational surrogacy where a donor other than the surrogate mother provides the eggs.

Financial Information

Costs for surrogacy will generally range from $70,000 to $90,000 depending on the number of IVF procedures required. The cost estimate includes an egg donor fee, surrogate fee, agency fee, legal fee, medical procedures, insurance and incidentals. Physician and egg donor fees are paid as expenses are incurred. Before beginning the IVF procedure, surrogate compensation is paid in advance and secured in a trust account managed by OurBirthRight on behalf of the surrogate mother.
